Autumn is a beautiful time of year. It’s an opportunity to enjoy the brisk outdoors and the magnificent colors of the foliage in most parts of the country. But looks can be deceiving and fall brings unique dangers for drivers.
Fall Weather Driving Life Hacks
Be prepared by performing a thorough pre-trip inspection of your vehicle. Keep tires properly inflated; make sure all lights and signals are working; keep mirrors and windows clean and streak-free inside and out; keep wiper blades clean and the washer fluid reservoir full; and check brakes for proper working condition. When driving in autumn:
- Slow down and increase your following distance. This cannot be stressed enough.
- Wear polarized sunglasses to reduce glare.
- Lower your visor to help block reflected light.
- Fall sunlight is often quite bright, and the glare can obscure vision. When driving into the sun, slow down and adjust following distance.
- Keep your headlights on to make your vehicle is visible to others. Use low beams in foggy conditions because high beams can cause glare.
- Watch for wildlife, especially at dusk and dawn.
